Sheriff Lee Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, will receive from President George W. Bush the 2004 Secretary of Defense ESGR National Freedom Award

Sheriff Lee Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, is being recognized by the the ESGR (Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve) with the 2004 Secretary of Defense ESGR National Freedom Award on September 21, 2004, at the Ronald Regan International Trade Center in Washington DC. President George Bush will personally present this most prestigious award to Sheriff Baca.

With more than 300 military reservists throughout the Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Baca had the vision to create the Military Activation Committee (MAC) in 2001, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in order to address the needs and concerns of the Department as well as for reserve employees by facilitating their transition to and from active military duty. Additionally, the Committee ensures command awareness and compliance with all county, state and federal laws regarding the protection of reserve employee rights, and has developed programs that recognize and support the activated reserve and their families during their tour of duty and upon their return to the Sheriff's Department.

For further information on this innovative program, you can log onto the LASD website http://lasd.org and link into the intranet information regarding MAC and the Pen Pal List of those currently serving on activated duty.

Other recipients of the 2004 Award include American Express, Bank One Corp, Colt Safety and Fire Rescue, Coors Brewing Co, General Electric, Harley-Davidson, The Home Depot, Northrop Grumman Corp, Wal-Mart Store, Inc, and four other employers who have demonstrated the highest level of corporate patriotism for exceptional support of their employees who serve our nation in the guard and Reserve.
